My World Cup fee is overdue
The current financial meltdown suffered by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is unfortunate but the newly-elected committee is trying hard to sort things out. Sri Lanka is very passionate about its cricket and this is one sport that is played in every nook and corner of our country. Unlike India, who have been able to market cricket through a proper channel, SLC have struggled chiefly due to poor financial returns. It's not that the Lankan board wants to keep pushing the players to play without pay, but it's the sheer passion that drives the players to represent the country at the international level. Financially, the television rights are paltry in Sri Lanka.
People often wonder why teams crave to play against India. It's the huge advertising and television rights that make way for a tremendous inflow of cash to the country's board's coffers.
