WHO'S UP



U R Ananthamurthy U R Ananthamurthy, the 80-year-old Kannada writer, was announced as one of the 10 finalists from all over the world for the prestigious Man Booker International Prize 2013, at the Jaipur Literature Festival on Thursday. Other authors in the running for the £60, 000 award include one each from Israel, Pakistan, China, France, Canada, Russia and Switzerland and two from the US. Bangalore-based Ananthamurthy is considered one of the pioneers of the Navya movement of modern Kannada literature and is a much-awarded writer - the Jnanpith Award is one of the several that he has been bestowed with for his prolific writing. He has written a large number of poems, short stories, plays, essays and novels;at least five of his works have been made into movies. The Man Booker International Prize 2013 will be announced in London on May 22.
