Health, wealth? Both?
Anumita Roychowdhury's 'Smog And Mirrors' (Comment, February 11) is not only interesting but should also serve as an eye opener on diesel car use. It is also timely, appearing just as the union budget is being decided. This article does surely make us all think twice. The finance minister should too, on whether big sops for diesel - which may be helpful for the exchequer in some ways, when more cars are sold - are more important than public health concerns? But we cannot compromise on public health. So why does the government then, like Germany, also not mandate the use of 10 ppm-sulphur diesel and push the use of better particulate filters?
