Any idea what the Prime Minister of India did yesterday ... or this past week? You might have caught a glimpse of him on TV if Parliament was in session, or seen him addressing some event, or heading out on a foreign tour. But most times, we have no idea what he is up to on a day-to-day, hour-to-hour basis. There are vague reports of Cabinet meetings and delegations and dignitaries calling on him, but often we don't hear about his activities for days. The PM is said to be a hard working man, but for all they tell us, he could be sleeping the whole day - and we wouldn't know. That's because his schedule is a closely guarded secret. Perhaps it's for security reasons, but more likely it's a systemic tendency to reveal as little as possible about our leaders and their movements - and moments - to ordinary mortals. This makes them distant and aloof. For instance, we have no idea what our Prime Minister and his gracious wife do in their spare time - or if they have any at all.
