Against the grain: Food security bill

With Pranab Mukherjee red-flagging the food security bill just ahead of the budget, differences over Sonia Gandhi’s showpiece legislation for UPA 2 seem far from resolved.
Just when it seemed that the Sonia Gandhi-Manmohan Singh tug-of-war over the food security bill had been settled in favour of the former, government ministers have again raised red flags that could jeopardise Sonia's showpiece legislation for UPA 2. The discordant notes are important because they came from none other than finance minister Pranab Mukherjee and agriculture minister Sharad Pawar. The former has to provide the money for universal food subsidy;the latter has to ensure that enough grain is available for distribution.

Both poured cold water over the proposed legislation at last week's conference of state food ministers.
