On a visit to Ujjain, I found it deeply absorbing to go into an ancient 'temple' that led me underground through a tunnel-like passage that ended in a tiny room where I could barely sit without my head touching the ceiling and where my nose came up against a blank wall. Strange as it might sound, it had forced me to come face to face with my inner self and reflect upon my earthly existence. I recounted this experience to Chittrovanu Mazumdar as he led me down The Passage - a corridor dimly washed in red light and adorned with miniature photographic images. The installation - on view at the Harrington Mansion and Art Centre - recalls the narrow passageway that leads us into the garbha griha - the sanctum sanctorum of a temple, or the entombed darkness of a sarcophagus, or even the safety of the womb. In either case, it indicates a journey from one state of being to another, one world to another, to a renewed consciousness, an awakening, or a rebirth.
