Shows of India's most celebrated abstract painter V S Gaitonde are rare. That's why when auction house Saffronart wanted to inaugurate its first gallery at the Oberoi in Delhi, it chose to showcase works of the late reclusive artist. Eighteen works were loaned from private collectors, all of whom refused to part with their precious Gaitondes. So, none of the works are on sale. "Gaitonde painted just 200 to 300 works in his lifetime, so it is very difficult to get a work by him, " says Dinesh Vazirani of Saffronart. The works on show document his experimentation with technique, format, style and colour. The first work one encounters is a portrait of Oscar-winning costume designer Bhanu Athaiya (1952). The journey moves to ink on paper, monochromes and his vivid abstracts. Show is on till Feb 4

Titled Continuum, the show marks the arrival of Delhi Art Gallery in a new space in Hauz Khas. On display are over 250 works of art by F N Souza, S H Raza, M F Husain, K H Ara, S K Bakre and H A Gade. "All six had different trajectories and this show lets us see how each of the artists defined his style, " says Kishore Singh, project director. The spectacular nude (above) by Ara, who started out washing cars, is one of the highlights of the exhibition. Continuum is on at the Delhi Art Gallery till Feb 28
